Good afternoon, and welcome to opening exercises. What a pleasure it is to greet Princeton's great class of 2027. We enthusiastically welcome all of you as you join the ranks of students who have left their marks on the Princeton campus and the world for generations through their intellect, creativity and passion. I also offer a warm welcome to our new graduate students, faculty and staff members and all those who are returning to campus today. We carry on a tradition that dates back at least to 1802, when Nassau Hall was the site of an exercise for Princeton students. The event switched to other sites before moving in 1929 to the University chapel and now to the front lawn of Nassau Hall, where we gather today. Today's interfaith ceremony is far different from the Christian services that greeted students in 129. And we have traded the chapel's soaring architecture for the graceful beauty of this historic site. But whatever our religious or ethical traditions might be, and wherever we might gather, this event continues to provide an opportunity for all of us to reflect on the larger purposes that should guide our community as we begin another year. In that spirit, I ask you to join me in reflecting on how fortunate we are to be on a campus of this kind, a campus that values the fearless pursuit of truth, cherishes the importance of service, and celebrates the dazzling diversity of identities, cultures, fates and backgrounds that form the rich tapestry of our community. At a time when so many in our world struggle to get the education they need to flourish, the health care they need to heal and the nourishment they need to survive, let us remember how rare and precious it is to define ourselves in such a community. Please join me in observing a moment of silent compassion for all the many people in the world, be they near this campus or far from it, who bear the burdens of injustice, violence, hunger, disease, natural disaster or poverty.
